MOUSE Hotfix 24-03-2009

This hotfix addresses the wish from some users to optionally include the handling of some hydrological losses in the MOUSE hydrological model B (Kinematic Wave), when used in conjunction with RDI model.

The stand-alone model B is not affected by the hotfix.

The hotfix concerns the following:

1. Wetting Loss: The hotfix introduces the surface wetting loss into the surface runoff calculation, equivalently as is it applied in the stand-alone application of the MOUSE hydrological model B (Kinematic Wave). This means:

a. The specified surface wetting loss is subtracted from the applied rainfall time series as the first loss, thus reducing the effective rainfall causing runoff;

b. In the case of multiple rainfall events, the surface wetting loss is applied for each event, provided the surface drying has taken place since the end of the previous event. The surface drying is induced by the action of evapo-transpiration, specified either as an evapo-transpiration time series or by the action of a constant “recovery rate”, introduced through the “dhiapp.ini” model initiation file. (RUNOFF_B_INITLOSS_RECOVER = 0.00005). The default recovery rate is rate 0.00005 m/hour.

The wetting loss and it’s recovery is applied on all five catchment surface types available.

2. Surface Storage Loss: the hotfix introduces the “recovery” of the surface storage capacity during dry intervals between simulated multiple rainfall events . The surface storage recovery is induced by the action of evapo-transpiration, specified either as an evapo-transpiration time series or by the action of a constant “recovery rate”, introduced through the “dhiapp.ini” model initiation file (RUNOFF_B_INITLOSS_RECOVER = 0.00005). The default recovery rate is rate 0.00005 m/hour.
The surface storage recovery is applied on all four catchment surface types where surface storage loss is calculated.

Activation of the hotfix:
The hotfix is activated through the “dhiapp.ini” model initiation file by the parameter “RDI_B_IncludeWettingAndStorageLoss”, according to the following:
RDI_B_IncludeWettingAndStorageLoss = 0 : Computation compatible with Release 2008 and earlier versions
RDI_B_IncludeWettingAndStorageLoss = 1 : Wetting and surface storage loss computed equivalently as in stand-alone model B
The new keyword should be placed in the section [MouseNam] in the “dhiapp.ini” file. Omitting the keyword is equivalent to “RDI_B_IncludeWettingAndStorageLoss = 0”. Default value.
